Chimney Cleaning Across Long Island

Chimneys age differently than the rest of the house, and Long Island has a lot of old ones. Masonry stacks from the 1920s and 30s still stand on colonials from Garden City to Northport, and the postwar building wave added tens of thousands more between 1947 and 1960. Then came the heating conversions. Oil to gas swaps across both counties left plenty of older flues carrying a fuel they were never sized or lined for, and gas exhaust behaves nothing like oil exhaust inside masonry. We open the damper, run a camera up the flue, and show you the real condition of the liner, the smoke shelf, and the crown before a single brush goes in.

The two counties hand us two different jobs. On the Nassau side, houses sit tight on small lots, and the fireboxes we sweep in Levittown, East Meadow, Hicksville, and Massapequa are typically modest, with short straight flues, many of them factory-built metal units dropped in during a 1980s or 90s family room addition. Those sweep quickly and cleanly. The South Shore is where it gets interesting. In Long Beach, Freeport, and Oceanside, salt air eats caps, spalls crown mortar, and rusts flashing, so we inspect the top of the stack as carefully as the bottom. Suffolk runs longer and taller. The colonials and expanded ranches around Huntington, Smithtown, Islip, and Brookhaven carry full masonry chimneys with two and three story flue runs, and the farther east you go, the more homes burn wood as actual heat rather than an occasional Saturday night. Heavy burning lays down creosote fast, especially the glazed, tarry kind that comes from damp cordwood and a cold flue. We brush the entire run from the smoke chamber to the cap, pull the creosote out, and show you the pile we collected. We quote chimney work after the inspection rather than before, because a 1931 masonry stack in Rockville Centre and a 1994 prefab in Medford are not the same job and we will not pretend they are.
